Day 11 - Your Top Three Favorite Bands
Oh gosh. I’m going to be here forever. xD Only I’m going to expand “bands” to “artists”, because my music tastes go far beyond “bands”. Ahem.
Estopa
Where to begin with Estopa. I first heard of them back in 2000, shortly after the release of their first album. A few of the songs were played on the radio, and my best friend made me a tape of it because her brother bought the album. I spent a couple months listening to them, and then just kind of stopped, and rediscovered them back in 2008 when I went back to Spain. It was mostly thanks to the Škoda car commercials they did which promoted the new album and featured “Cuando Amanece”. I liked the song in the commercials and I knew I had the discography downloaded on my computer, so I started listening to them. Got hooked. Bought that latest CD, Allenrok, and they swiftly became my favorite band ever. They’re from Barcelona (of course), and their music is basically a mixture of rumba catalana, flamenco and rock, with some other influences thrown in, and they’re really just their own blend of uniqueness and awesome. I love every single album of theirs and while there are a few songs I’d give a “pass” to, I still can’t imagine any of their albums without those songs. Quality. Absolute quality.
Jarabe de Palo
Was first introduced to them in 1998 through their single “Depende”, which was probably the most quoted and overused song of the year, but I loved it. I still have awesome memories that come back to me whenever I hear that song. They’re also from Barcelona (Want good music? Find artists from Barcelona, you’re pretty much guaranteed to find something good. 90% of the artists I listen to are from Barcelona, true story.), and their music is probably more Alternative, but it’s a happy alternative. Their lyrics tend to be very positive and the music itself is pretty soothing, and they’re overall just such a wonderful “feel good” band without feeling like you’re listening to cheese, because you’re not. I have to admit, I haven’t listened to them in a while, but they’re still on my top-3 list because they’re like Estopa in the sense that even though it’s been a while since I’ve listened to them, in general, I am always in the mood to listen to their music.
Gareth Emery
Okay, so to be perfectly honest the main reason he’s on this list is because I’m obsessed with his newest album. Obsessed. But odds are, I’ll look back on this in the next few months and won’t complain about him being on here, because I have a hard time choosing my top-3 artists/bands, since once I get past Estopa, it’s nearly impossible to choose. And I love Gareth. So. I first discovered Gareth Emery through the A State of Trance 2007 compilation. He did a remix for a track called “Formentera What” by Mike Vorne which I absolutely loved. When I got my Zune and was looking for trance podcasts to download that summer (2008), I saw the “Gareth Emery Podcast Party”, recognized the name, and decided to subscribe. I’ve been addicted ever since. This guy is an incredibly talented DJ, and while most of the time he just does mixes, when he does put out his own tracks they are works of art. So when I heard the preview for this album, his first artist album, I knew I had to get a hold on it. It is seriously one of the best albums I’ve ever listened to, it is absolutely amazing, and I really want to buy the album so that I can actually *own* it, though I would like to support the artist.

This is a collection of songs I put together that remind me of the Catalan city of Terrassa, which I visited twice this summer (in a week). They also work really well (at least for me) as a rainy day mix because, well, it was cloudy and humid the two days I was there, so that had an influence on the music I associate with the city. It’s mostly a collection of Spanish indie, save for a few English artists (R.E.M. making the most distinctive appearance in the English songs).
Feel free to use the image as an album cover, or just create your own playlist.
Enjoy!
Also, if you’re interested, I uploaded a Summer 2010 mix here.
So I have a real cracktastic taste in music…

List 10 musical artists you like, in no specific order (do this before reading the questions below)
- Estopa
- Love of Lesbian
- Gareth Emery
- Armin van Buuren
- Above & Beyond
- Enrique Iglesias
- Ojos de Brujo
- Macaco
- Lax ‘n’ Busto
- Hevia
What is the first song you heard by number 6? Oh gosh. Um…”Bailamos”, way back in ‘98. Yup.
What is your favorite song by number 8? ”Como el Agua Cale”. Unf.
What kind of impact has number 1 had on your life? They are my “comfort food” music. I don’t not like any of their songs, seriously. I am convinced they can do no wrong musically and I will forever love them.
What is your favorite lyric(s) of number 5? Err… “Been talking to myself forever, and how I wish I knew me better, yeah. Still sitting on a shelf, I’ve never seen the sun shine brighter. And it feels like me on a good day.”
What song by 3 makes you happy? ”Formentera What”. It’s actually by Mike Vorne but Gareth Emery remixed it, and it is serious unf.
When did you first get into 2? Earlier this year, when I saw some people talking about them and I figured I’d check them out.
How did you get into 3? I started downloading his podcasts right after I got my mp3 player and was looking for good dance music podcasts. I recognized his name, and downloaded the podcast, and I swear his is the best podcast I listen to on a regular basis.
What is your favorite song by 4? ”In and Out of Love” with Sharon den Adel.
How many times have you seen 9 live? Never
Favorite album by 7? I’m always switching between Techarí and Aocana.
What is your favorite song of 1? Oh. ”Luna Lunera.” Definitely.
How did you become a fan of number 10? The piece “Busindre Reel” was a hit on Top-40 radio back in ‘99, and since I’m a sucker for folk fusion, I got really into it. Even back when I was 14 I still had an eclectic taste in music. xD
Who’s the most attractive member of number 8? Uh…he’s just one person…and he’s not bad, I guess, I don’t really focus on the looks though.
What song of 4’s do you listen to the least? I honestly have no idea. I don’t pay attention to play counts, mostly because my mp3 player doesn’t have play counts and I don’t pay attention to it on WinAmp. So I really don’t have a clue.
How long have you known 9? A little over a year, since I started learning Catalan.
Top 5 favorite songs by 5? Oh gosh. Um. ”On a Good Day”, “Lonely Girl”, “Miracle”, “Satellite” and “I am What I Am”.
What’s your favorite cover by number 2? Probably the one for Cuentos chinos para niños del Japón. Very simple, but unique.
Have you seen 10 live? Nope.
Have you met 4? Nope.
What’s your favorite album by 1? I can’t choose. Seriously. I can’t. They’re all so so so good and they all have songs I love. But for the sake of argument I’ll say ¿La Calle es Tuya?.
Favorite lyric of 7? I have no idea.
What is one of 2’s best songs? ”Limousinas”. I think it’s beautiful.
How many times have you seen number 2 live? None.
Which number have you known the longest? 10.
What’s your favorite song by number 9? Probably “Blues del Diumenge”. Yeah. (I like their newest album best, okay? Though “Més que la meva sang” is a classic I guess.)

Please let me know if you download this, and if you have any questions/comments (something doesn’t work right, you need me to upload it again, etc.). Not all songs are actually *from* this summer, but they are songs I fell in love with this summer and which give me a lot of fun mental images, either of the beach or of Barcelona, or my Spain trip in general, or even Manhattan. They are all electronic/dance/house/techno songs, so if that kind of music really isn’t your cup of tea, you don’t have to download. Also, feel free to use the graphic as your album cover, or just create your own playlist. Whatever you want.
Enjoy!
